Separating the accounts
A Monaco household budget needs to distinguish spending from capital committed. Annual rent is an expense; a refundable deposit ties up cash without necessarily becoming a cost. A home purchase commits capital, while its running costs still belong in the annual account. Money retained in a bank account is also an asset rather than consumption.
Housing and school choice can produce large differences between households. Paid help and travel to other homes add further variation. A single citywide monthly estimate cannot describe both a couple in a compact apartment and a family needing several bedrooms and international schooling.
Housing costs
Written apartment offers provide the basis for a tenant's calculation. Rent and charges need to be recorded alongside parking or storage. The quotation also needs to establish which utilities and services are included, the payment timetable and the deposit. Intermediary charges may add to the arrival budget.
For an owner, building accounts and planned works provide evidence of recurring obligations. Insurance and internal maintenance remain relevant, with financing costs where applicable. Acquisition and initial renovation belong outside the normal operating year. Dividing a purchase price by twelve does not produce a meaningful monthly cost of living.
International School of Monaco example
The International School of Monaco's 2026 to 2027 financial conditions list a €500 application fee, €2,000 registration fee and €25,000 Capital Development Fund charge per new student. They are described as non-refundable and total €27,500 before tuition. Annual tuition is €31,900 for Years 4 to 6 and €36,100 for Years 10 to 13.
For a new pupil in Years 4 to 6, tuition plus those three charges totals €59,400 before extras. At the same published rate, subsequent-year tuition is €31,900. This is an example from one school. The child's year group, available place and contract determine the relevant offer. Uniforms, transport, activities and individual support need examination against that offer. The payment timetable also affects the first-year cash requirement.
Staff and utilities
Agreed net pay does not describe the full cost of employing a nanny or housekeeper. Monaco's Caisses Sociales has an affiliation process for household employers, including an employer number tracking staff and contributions and an employment form for each hire. A calculation of pay and related employer costs provides a fuller estimate. Replacement cover also requires a budget where uninterrupted help is needed.
SMEG explains that electricity pricing depends on subscribed power and the choice of base or peak/off-peak options. The apartment's equipment and consumption affect the estimate, particularly heating and cooling. Building charges may already include some items; counting them again as utilities would overstate spending.
Transport and other annual spending
CAM lists an adult monthly pass at €22 and an annual pass at €199 paid upfront. Twelve monthly passes cost €264, making the upfront annual option €65 less. These are specific published prices, unlike an estimate of private transfers or travel to another home, which depends on the household's calendar. Vehicles also involve parking, insurance and capital committed to their purchase.
The remaining account includes childcare and applicable health cover, with deductibles or expenses outside insurance. An address alone does not settle eligibility for health coverage. Groceries, dining and sport can be estimated from a normal month, alongside culture and entertaining. Holidays and exceptional celebrations need separate entries. Supplier quotations and actual policy terms give these lines an evidential basis.
| Budget line | Evidence to collect | Keep separate |
|---|---|---|
| Home & services | Lease, building accounts, supplier quotes | Deposits, acquisition costs, renovations |
| Children & health | School offer, childcare agreement, insurance terms | School entry fees and refundable sums |
| People & mobility | Payroll calculation, household travel calendar | Capital committed to vehicles |
| Lifestyle | Household dining, sport and culture plans | Exceptional entertaining or travel |
Cash during the move
A monthly payment schedule shows when deposits, furnishing and school entry charges fall due. A period of overlap between two homes can require additional liquid cash even where annual income covers ongoing spending. Refundable sums need to remain visible in that schedule.
An alternative budget can use revised quotations for more expensive housing, an extra monthly journey or temporary replacement staff. This exposes the assumptions behind the total. Published price examples were checked on 16 October 2026 and need reconfirming when contracting.
